It’s clear cowboy hats and fedoras are back in style! Many of us want the hat that accentuates our look, that captures the western styling, while also being uniquely our own. Colbert Hat Co. has served as Boulder County’s western hat makers since 2024, and we are thrilled to offer a new, completely custom hat-making experience. Sometimes you need something that is truly one-of-a-kind. That’s why our team has added a new service - hats completely made from scratch!
What’s the difference between a Custom hat & one made from scratch?
Materials that last
Most hats are made out of a combination of wool, felt, and the hide of an animal, usually a rabbit or beaver blend. Those work great for most situations, yet sometimes we need something special, something unique, something that is made to order!
We construct these custom hats from a flat piece of felt that is made from 100% rabbit, 100% beaver, or a 50/50 rabbit-beaver blend.
Why do we use these materials?
When we construct the hat from scratch, we can guarantee that your hat is all-natural. These also make the hats far more durable. Beaver hats can be worn in any conditions!
We can explain the pros and cons of each material so we can find the perfect material for your commissioned hat.
But the materials are only the first step!
A completely custom hat-shaping process
Once we know what material we are making your hat from, that’s where the fun begins. Let’s get to customizing!
First, we’ll figure out what color your hat should be. Since we make these hats from scratch, we can source materials in a variety of colors as well as offering some dyes and treatments to give your hat a stunning look.
Then we’ll pick out a shape for your hat. Cowboy hat or fedora? Cattleman, Gus, Dakota, Cutter, or one of the many other styles. Do you want a squared, rounded, or traditional western brim?
Don’t worry if this isn’t making sense. We have samples and examples to show you so you can feel confident through every step of the process.
Let’s Accessorize!
What’s the point of having a custom western hat if you can’t accessorize it? This is what gives your hat personality and makes it feel uniquely yours.
We can add bands, feathers, pins, photos, and playing cards to the hat. If you’re looking for something a bit more rustic, we can add some controlled burn areas, branding, or initials as well.
Every detail you add at this stage is a conversation starter. The best part is, you can change these out to give the hat a whole new look, although we recommend only doing that occasionally.
